UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State’s College of Education share recent research and career achievements:

·      Sarah Asson, a doctoral candidate in educational leadership, is one of 15 recipients of the American Educational Research Association Dissertation and Research Grant Awards. Grant recipients are studying salient issues in STEM education and policy as well as topics in early childhood development, teacher and student school experiences, and outcomes of education policies and practices. The title of Asson’s project is “Rezoning Educational Opportunities: Measuring the Relationship Between School Attendance Zone Boundary Changes and Patterns of Racial Segregation and Educational Inequality in the D.C. Metropolitan Area.” In addition, Asson is lead author of a research brief, “Data Access and the Study of Educational Equity: Implications from a National School Boundary Data Collection Effort” in Education Finance & Policy. Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership and demography), and Annie Maselli, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education Policy Studies, are co-authors of the brief. Asson and Maselli are also co-authors of a blog post about their research, “Data Access and the Study of Educational Equity: Implications from a National School Boundary Data Collection Effort” for School Diversity Notebook.

·      Katerina Bodovski, professor of education (educational theory and policy), presented a talk, “Emotional Capital and Educational Policy,” at the conference “The Construction of First-class Discipline of Education” at Faculty of Education, Shandong Normal University, China, on Oct. 30.

·      Gilberto Q. Conchas, who holds the Wayne K. and Anita Woolfolk Hoy Endowed Professorship of Education, has been appointed as Chair Designate of the Research Advisory Committee of AERA for a three-year term.

·      Ed Fuller, associate professor of education (educational leadership), is quoted in an article, “Report: More Pa. teachers hired under emergency permits than received formal certifications” in Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. 

·      Brandy Henry, assistant professor of education (rehabilitation and human services), is co-author of a newly published paper, “Evidence of Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Black Women Under Community Supervision in New York City: A Plea for Culturally Tailored Intimate Partner Violence Interventions” in Women’s Health Reports.

·      Paul Morgan, Harry & Marion Eberly Faculty Fellow and professor of education (educational theory and policy), is lead author of a new paper, “Disparities in Family-Centered Care Among U.S. Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs” in The Journal of Pediatrics. Eric Hengyu Hu, Cecelia A. Gloski and Yangyang Wang, all doctoral candidates in EPS, are co-authors. In addition, Morgan, along with Hu and Gloski, authored another new publication, “Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Advanced Science and Mathematics Achievement During Elementary School” in Gifted Child Quarterly.

·      David Passmore, distinguished professor emeritus of education, is quoted in an article, “Wolf signs hastily passed $2 billion tax package that encourages natural gas production in Pa.” by Spotlight PA.

·      Javier Casado Pérez, assistant professor of education (counselor education),and Julia Bryan, professor of education (counselor education), are co-authors of a new article, “It’s about Time That We Listened: Black Women’s Resilience in the Face of Intimate Partner Violence” in Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy.

·      LaWanda Ward, assistant professor of education (higher education), and research associate (Center for the Study of Higher Education), is quoted in an article, “As Race-Conscious Admissions Policies Go Before the Supreme Court, Here’s What 6 Experts Are Listening For” in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
